“Things get messy when you make a deal with the devil.”

Listening to this episode, you may say to yourself “This is not my beautiful wife!” “Hmm, not really that much talk about The Babysitter itself, now, is there?” and that is true. But my guest, writer/illustrator Keezy Young, chose this movie and made some interesting points about the ways the film ties into their work in comics. So we mostly talked about their work in comics! In particular their newest effort Hello Sunshine, a massive and affecting undertaking that depicts severe mental illness and grief all wrapped up in a nice, toasty, queer horror-flavored mystery. It’s good stuff, and more compelling to talk about than Bella Thorne getting stabbed in the boob.

Look, I am not here to harsh anyone’s lovin’ vibes about The Babysitter! After all, most people have lovin’ vibes about The Babysitter. I wanted to join those ranks but it felt like the movie fought me at nearly every turn, aggressively announcing itself…often literally, with big, bold text splashed across the screen. There was an interesting story in there somewhere. I could feel it lurking beneath all the on-the-nose needle drops and obvious choices, the Ready Player One-style references and glaring plot holes. Keezy’s read of the film—one filtered through the lens of their own personal experiences with psychosis—is one I wish I’d heard before I watched it.

Oh, and by the way, as I mentioned in the episode, I did set up my Bluesky profile page thing, so there’s that. I can’t promise it will be exciting, but it is where I will be when I’m not…you know. “Spending” “time” with my old reviews!

Check out lots more of Keezy’s work at KeezyYoung.com if you know what’s good for ya!
